July Sails On

My blog’s feeling pretty neglected. I’ve gone past guilt now and just don’t even bother to look anymore; I was brought back to Earth by a nice fellow who goes by ‘Divide’ who commented on one of my earlier posts about Linux font rendering (and is apparently a font pedant—like me).

As usual, there’s not much to report; life is busy as always raising a kid, and the older he gets, the more he terrorises us and eats up all our free time. I keep telling myself how lucky we are to have gotten away so lightly as he is going through some heavy teething at the moment.

Well, I haven’t been up to much; spending a bit of time outside tending the lawn and garden, cleaning up and fixing up the car, and squeezing a bit of Python development in here and there have been the highlights of my spare time over the past few weeks. I’m hoping to steal away for a few days’ vacation in mid-late August, possibly to do some camping—but we’ll have to see how work goes.

It might not be such a bad thing to go in September instead, when kids are back in school and it’s easier to find a camp site (especially one that’s quiet). I’m also undecided on the issue of campgrounds; I personally like heading a solid 4-5 hours North for a site, but that probably isn’t practical for bringing a baby along (especially if we end up having to ditch at 2 A.M. because the baby is inconsolable; this has happened before to other parents who had the same bright idea to take their kids camping). I also suspect it’s probably unrealistic to expect to be able to stay for longer than one or, at most, two nights in a row—because Becka has work to go to, and our car would already be close to maximum capacity with just the tent, sleeping bags, baby, and our dumb mutt (to say nothing of fishing gear, which would be most of the point of going, besides a nice morning hike and an evening campfire).

Anyway, vacation reverie aside, life rattles on. It’s still pretty lonely in Ottawa with so many friends abroad, but we’ve stayed in touch, which is great. Marc pops on to MSN once in a while which helps me cope; the other day I was looking at photos from his going away party and thought of how it seems so recent—and yet so long ago.

Anyway, back to work, my liquid (read: coffee) lunchbreak is over.

I still say we need a roof rack thingie :) At least we know we won’t need a stroller, the Ergo rolls up neatly. If we’re willing to let the Mutt go crateless we can stack better! And really, I think we’ve found that Loosh settles pretty quickly when given the option of snuggling with Mommma and Daddy. I’d really love to see something new and get away for a while.

I’m cool with the idea, but a pair of rails with cross-beams will easily cost >$250; the hard-shell roof racks seem to start around $300, but we’d be looking at something more like $400-450 for carrying anything significantly larger than a single suitcase.
